Bio

Vasilena Gankovska was born in Troyan, Bulgaria in 1978 and has been living in Vienna and Sofia since 2001, working as visual artist and exhibition maker. The artist has a degree in Fine Arts from the Academy of fine arts Vienna. Her work has been showcased in multiple exhibitions - amongst others in Vienna, Warsaw, Sofia, Los Angeles and Zurich - and has been recognized with several awards.

Gankovska's artistic body of work deals with the different aspects of urban life, leisure, and work and the spaces in which this takes place. Currently, she is exploring the relationship between architecture, (fashion) design, art, and ideology in the urban space of former Eastern Bloc countries.

Another topic of interest for the artist is the formation of pop and visual culture in a post-socialist society, specifically the role TV series formats (soap operas, telenovelas, reality tv) play in this process.

Since 2016, Gankovska is responsible for GALERIE IG BILDENDE KUNST in Vienna as gallery spokesperson and curator.
